Founding and the early years (1964-1980)
Labkotec Oy was founded in 1964 by Aate A. Virtanen. The company’s original name, Oy Labko Ab, derives from the words “Laboratory Equipment.” In its early years, the company focused on the production of salmon boats and salmon farming, but soon shifted towards technology. Labko’s breakthrough was a level measurement device developed from a grain moisture meter, marking the beginning of the company’s journey as a developer and manufacturer of environmental protection devices and systems. Next in the product range were fiberglass tanks and separators.
Growth and innovation (1980-2000)
Labko developed several products related to environmental protection, such as oil separator alarms and fiberglass tanks. Labko accumulated over 20 patents and design protections for products and ideas that promote environmental protection both in Finland and abroad. In the 1990s, the company launched wing ice detection technology for airplanes, which was later applied to wind turbines. In 1998, the LabkoNet remote monitoring system was introduced, enabling real-time monitoring of measurement data.
